ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of measuring the power of a lens especially a contact lens, comprises the steps of providing a collimated beam of light, sampling the beam with an opto-electronic transducer to produce an output signal representing the intensity of light across the width of the beam, and converting the transducer output signal to digital form and loading the resulting digital signal into a computer memory. These steps are then repeated with a lens inserted into the path of the beam for at least one separation distance between the lens and the transducer, and the power of the lens is calculated from the digital signals stored in the computer memory.
