A method for mitigating initiation or propagation of a crack in a surface of a metal component in a water- cooled nuclear reactor or associated equipment. The method includes the step of injecting a solution or suspension of a pH-adjusting compound into the water of the reactor. The pH-adjusting compound is added in an amount such that the pH at the tip of the crack or at the point where said crack would otherwise be initiated is between about 6.5 and 8.0 (at temperature) indepen- dent of the electrochemical potential. The compound decomposes under reactor thermal conditions to release ions/atoms which adjust the pH of the water. The adjusted pH of the reactor water is in the range of 6.5 to 8Ø
