ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The surface of animal fibers, animal fiber-containing goods or fiber of furs is covered with water-repelling scales but interscale and its continuing endo cuticles have a hydro- philic property and, on the basis of the difference of their behavior upon the water, the present invention provides a method of modifying animal fiber goods by stripping off the scales. The method allows only the hydrophilic portions to adsorb chem- icals which serve as a catalyst of oxidation in the subsequent step. The animal fiber is immersed in an aqueous solution of a chlorinating agent or other agents so that vigorous oxidative decomposition occurs due to the catalytic action of the chemicals so that the scales are destroyed from the inside and stripped off. The animal fiber is treated in a solution containing a reducing agent.
