METHOD OF MOMENTARILY EXTENDING THE OPERATIVE RANGE OF AN EQUILIBRIUM TYPE CATALYST ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is disclosed of momentarily extending towards lean conditions the air-fuel ratio at which an equilibrium type catalyst is operative in the removal of oxides of nitrogen, unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide from an exhaust gas stream of an internal combus- tion engine. The method involves providing rhenium as one of the elements present on the catalyst substrate. When the catalyst is subjected to lean conditions, during which an excess amount of oxygen is present, the rhenium takes up the oxygen so that some of the carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons present still react with the oxides of nitrogen to reduce them to nitrogen.
