A process is described for the control of the development of mosquitoes in a body of water, by spreading on the body of water a particulate carbohydrate compound. The carbohydrate compound may be a given compound that forms a hydrophilic gum-like layer once spread on the surface of the water. The gum- like layer prevents the development of mosquito in the larvae and pupae stages. It is also believed to inhibit the laying of eggs on the water surface by the female mosquito. The layer found is environmentally safe as the carbohydrates used are common in food products.
