"A method of multiple-stage continuous fermentation for the production of growth-inhibitory fermentation products" ABSTRACT A method of continuous fermentation for the production of growth- inhibitory fermentation product(s), which method comprises effecting fer- mentation in two or more fermenters operating with selective biomass retention, effluent from the first fermenter being obtained in two separate streams, one relatively low in biomass concentration and one relatively high in biomass concentration, a first fermenter being operated in a steady state with the concentration of the inhibitory product(s) below the concentration at which growth of the product(s) would be prevented, a controlled pro- portion of relatively low concentration biomass stream and relatively high concentration biomass stream being fed to a second fermenter.
