An ice thickness/drift speed observation of sea ice using an underwater mooring type ice thickness measuring sonar and a flow rate meter is conducted in synchronization with a sea ice observation by a high-resolution flight SAR, to determine the relation between the draft profile of sea ice passed over the sonar and an SAR back-scattering coefficient profile, and a desired sea-ice draft is obtained from the relational expression and an SAR back-scattering coefficient. The back-scattering coefficient of L band HV polarization may be used as an SAR back-scattering coefficient. The back-scattering coefficient of an X band VV polarization is preferably used as an SAR back-scattering coefficient in detecting thin ice up to about 10 cm thick.

L'observation de l'épaisseur/vitesse de dérive de la glace marine à l'aide d'un sonar de mesure d'épaisseur du type à ancrage sous-marin et d'un débitmètre s'effectue en même temps que l'observation de la glace marine à l'aide d'un radar à antenne synthétique (SAR) embarqué à résolution élevée afin de déterminer la relation entre le profil de tirant d'eau de la glace marine qui est passée sur le sonar et le profil de coefficient de rétrodiffusion de SAR. On obtient le tirant d'eau de glace marine désiré à partir d'une expression relationnelle et d'un coefficient de rétrodiffusion de SAR. On peut utiliser le coefficient de polarisation HV de bande L comme coefficient de rétrodiffusion de SAR. On utilise, de préférence, le coefficient de rétrodiffusion de polarisation VV de bande X comme coefficient de rétrodiffusion de SAR pour détecter une épaisseur de glace pouvant atteindre 10cm.
