A method for obtaining particulate calcium carbonate having an average particle size less than about 12 microns is provided. The method includes the steps of (1) withdrawing from a pulp mill a mixture containing calcium carbonate; (2) treating the mixture to remove contaminants contained in the mixture to produce a treated mixture containing calcium carbonate and further having a chemical composition and/or purity which substantially inhibits the fusing together of calcium carbonate particulates; (3) recovering from the treated mixture particulate calcium carbonate having an average particle size less than about 12 microns. The calcium carbonate produced has a high surface area to volume ratio and is therefore highly reactive and suitable for numerous applications such as in the treatment of soil, filler paper production, paint production, and contaminant containment in coal stack emission assemblies.

L'invention porte sur une méthode pour obtenir des particules de carbonate de calcium dont la taille moyenne est inférieure à environ 12 microns. La méthode comprend les étapes suivantes : 1) prélever dans une usine de pâte un mélange renfermant du carbonate de calcium; 2) traiter le mélange pour éliminer les contaminants présents dans le mélange et obtenir un mélange traité contenant le carbonate de calcium et possédant une composition chimique et (ou) un degré de pureté, qui empêche dans une large mesure la fusion des particules de carbonate de calcium; 3) récupérer à partir du mélange traité les particules de carbonate de calcium possédant une taille moyenne inférieure à environ 12 microns. Le carbonate de calcium produit présente un rapport élevé aire surfacique/volume et est donc très réactif et bien adapté pour de nombreuses applications, comme le traitement des sols, la production de papier-charge, la production de peinture et le confinement des contaminants dans les dispositifs de cheminées pour les émissions de charbon.
