The invention is based on partitioning the 10,000 - plus character Chinese / Japanese / Korean font system into a number of font sub-sets; each of the partitions is small enough to be handled within the 8-bit font environment limit of 256 characters per font, and is designated in the Windows font registry as an independent font. Thus, the CJK characters can be encoded in single-byte codes, instead of double-byte codes that cause problems (framing error, code mangling). Interaction and data exchange with other Windows applications (both English and CJK-localized) take place through the OLE, RTF Cut&Paste / RTF filesave, and SBCS / DBCS Cut&Paste procedures, thus ensuring universal system compatibility. The invention allows the display of CJK text within documents written in software applications that are based on English or other languages using Roman characters.
