A method of operating a molten carbonate fuel cell having an anode and a cathode and in between a matrix comprising molten carbonate. Carbon dioxide is introduced into the matrix at a distance from the cathode. This greatly reduces the cathode's deterioration and in the system design increases the control potential of the fuel cell. A fuel cell or a fuel cell stack using said method. Method of generating electricity in a fuel cell, wherein water and carbonaceous material are heated at high temperature, yielding hydrogenous gas for the anode. The hydrogenous depleted gas from the anode is supplied with oxygenous gas and at least partially oxidized, producing heat for heat exchange with the water and carbonaceous material. Installation comprising a reform unit and a fuel cell using said method.
La présente invention concerne un procédé de fonctionnement d'une pile à carbonates fondus présentant une anode ainsi qu'une cathode, entre lesquelles on a placé une matrice comprenant du carbonate fondu. Selon l'invention, on introduit du dioxyde de carbone dans la matrice, à une certaine distance de la cathode, ce qui a pour effet de réduire grandement l'endommagement de celle-ci et permet d'accroître, dans cette conception du système, le potentiel régulateur de cette pile à combustible. L'invention concerne encore une pile à combustible ou un empilement de celles-ci. On décrit encore un procédé de production d'électricité dans une pile à combustible, consistant à chauffer l'eau et la matière carbonée à haute température, afin de produire du gaz hydrogéné destiné à l'anode. Le gaz hydrogéné appauvri provenant de l'anode est alimenté en gaz oxygéné et il est au moins partiellement oxydé, produisant de la chaleur destinée à l'échange de chaleur avec l'eau et la matière carbonée. On décrit encore une installation comprenant un reformeur ainsi qu'une pile à combustible mettant en oeuvre le procédé ci-dessus.
