A method of operating a data network, of the type in which a number of inter- connected router devices forward received packets of data towards a destination node in accordance with a routing table associated with each router. The method comprises: receiving routing information at one of said routers, determining if the information is such that, if it were correct, it would cause the router to update its routing table in respect of one or more entries, and, if so, sending out two test packets, one of which is sent out according to the existing information contained in the routing table and the other of which is sent out according to the information which would be included in the routing table if it were up-dated in accordance with the received information; comparing the results of the two test sending; and updating the routing table to reflect the received information if the comparison indicates that the received information is correct, but otherwise ignoring the information and maintaining the routing table unchanged.

L'invention concerne un procédé de fonctionnement d'un réseau de transmission de données, dans lequel plusieurs dispositifs de routage interconnectés transmettent des paquets de données reçus vers un noeud de destination en fonction d'une table de routage associée à chaque routeur. Ce procédé consiste : à recevoir des informations de routage au niveau d'un des routeurs, à déterminer si les informations sont des informations de mise à jour de la table de routage du routeur, sur la base d'une ou plusieurs entrées, et, dans la positive, à transmettre deux paquets d'essai, un des paquets d'essai étant transmis en fonction des informations existantes contenues dans la table de routage et l'autre paquet d'essai étant transmis en fonction des informations qui seraient inclues dans la table de routage si elle était mise à jour en fonction des informations reçues ; à comparer les résultats des deux transmissions d'essai ; et, soit à mettre à jour la table de routage de façon que les informations reçues soient prise en compte si la comparaison indique que les informations reçues sont correctes, soit à ignorer les informations et à laisser la table de routage telle qu'elle est.
