11 ABSTRACT Method of operating a smelting unit and a smelting unit for that method In a smelting unit comprising a furnace vessel containing a heat source and a furnace hearth, and at least one shaft-like charging material preheater which is arranged laterally on the furnace vessel and the bottom of which is designed to drop away towards the furnace vessel and the interior of which is connected in a region adjoining its bottom to the interior of the furnace vessel through a connecting zone, controlling the supply of energy into the lower region of the column of charging material which is formed in the charging material preheater causes a variation in the spatial extent of a supporting structure (iron block) which is formed by pieces of charging material being welded together, in order to control the flow of material into the furnace hearth.
