ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved method for the manufacture of alkali metal hydroxide in a three compartment electrolytic cell having at least one anode compartment, one cathode compartment and one buffer compartment with at least two cation-active permselective membranes of polymeric material defining anode and cathode side walls of a buffer compartment between anode and cathode compartments and mixing the alkali metal hydroxide solution in the buffer compartment to produce an essentially uniform concentration.
