Abstract In a method of operating a vapor burner, liquid fuel is fed to an evaporating chamber, is there heated up to vaporisation and then delivered substantially as a gas to a combustion chamber where it is mixed with at least the predominant part of the air of combustion. In a clean- sing phase taking place during interruption of fuel supply, the evaporating chamber is heated to a cleansing temperature at which deposits on the chamber wall burn to ash. The ash is then blown out into the combustion chamber, e.g. by cleansing air supplied during the cleansing phase. The evaporating chamber is substantially formed by an evaporating tube (2) extending centrally to the passage system (10). The cross-section of the outlet aperture (5) is at least 5% of the internal cross-section of the evaporating tube (2). A control device (28) comprises a programme circuit (60) which is so designed that, in the presence of i blocking signal (R) at the first outlet (61) and on the occurrence of a cleansing signal (S), the second outlet (62) delivers a switching signal (T) by reason of which the heating apparatus (2) is supplied with electric energy sufficient for burning deposits in the evaporating chamber (1).
