A method of operating and self-cleaning a star screen system. Star screen systems are usually made of several rotatable shafts disposed in parallel and each having a plurality of stars mounted on their axis. A chain drive allows to rotate the shafts simultaneously. The first step of the method consists of supplying material to be screened on the surface of the screen and rotating the shafts at a screening rotation speed. The supplying of material is then stopped. An optional step of operating the screen at the screening rotation speed may then be performed, to remove the remaining material to be screened from the screening surface. The next step consists of increasing the rotation speed to a value sufficient to dislodge material clogging the stars from the system by centrifugal ejection. This allows for self-cleaning of the system that is efficient and does not require the use of brushes or other cleaning tools.

Ce type de système est habituellement constitué de plusieurs arbres tournants parallèles, chaque arbre étant muni de plusieurs étoiles montées sur leur axe. Un mécanisme de transmission par chaîne fait tourner les arbres simultanément. La première étape du mode proposé consiste à déposer le matériau à cribler sur la surface du crible et à faire tourner les arbres à une vitesse de criblage. La prochaine étape consiste à augmenter la vitesse de rotation suffisamment pour déloger du système, par éjection centrifuge, le matériau qui encrasse les étoiles. Le système s'auto-nettoie ainsi automatiquement sans qu'il soit nécessaire d'utiliser des brosses ou d'autres outils de nettoyage.
