METHOD OF OPERATING AN ELECTROLYTIC CELL Abstract Disclosed is a method of electrolyzing sodium chloride brine in an electrolytic cell having a coated metal anode in the anolyte compartment and a catholyte compartment separated from the anolyte compartment by an asbestos diaphragm. The method of this invention involves forming an anolyte liquor substantially free of resinous organic compounds solubilized from graphite anodes and cementitious compounds of alkaline earth metals solubilized from concrete structural members, imposing a hydrostatic head on the anolyte liquor while simultaneously passing an electrical current from the anode to the cathode and maintaining the anolyte liquor chlorate ion content within satisfactory limits by adding a limited amount of asbestos to the anolyte liquor over extended periods of electrolysis. According to the disclosed method, asbestos is added to the anolyte chamber of the cell at a rate of asbestos addition high enough to maintain a low chlorate content and low pH in the anolyte liquor, but at a low enough rate to maintain a low hydrostatic head between the anolyte chamber and the catholyte chamber.
