Species of shrub willow are used to accumulate contaminants, such as arsenic, from contaminated soil or water. Contaminants can be removed from the soil or water via phytoremediation through plant parts, such as the roots. The biomass of the shrub willow can be harvested and readily disposed of, or can be treated to recover the contaminants.
