In securing an anchor in a borehole in a receiving material, a gettable hydraulic dowel compound is introduced into the borehole either before, during or immediately after the placement of an anchor member having a variable cross-sectional area along its length. The settable dowel compound includes an expandable component. The depth of the borehole is from 6 to 10 times the average diameter of the anchor member. The diameters of the borehole and the anchor member are selected so that an annular gap extends around the anchor member with the gap having a mean annular area of from 100 mm2 to 200 mm2. The expandable component ensures an increase in the volume of the dowel compound above an initial volume in a free expansion procedure.
