ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for preparing novel sulfinyl azetidinone compounds is described. These novel compounds are prepared by reacting the corresponding azetidinone sulfinyl chlorides with water or with one of the following classes of compounds: (1) an alcohol, (2) a mercaptan or thiophenol, (3) an amine or (4) an imide. The sulfinyl azetidinone compounds so pre- pared are useful in preparing 3-methylenecepham sulfoxides, which in turn are useful intermediates in the preparation of cephem antibiotics.
