ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a novel process for preparing 3-methylenecepham sulfoxide by the intramolecular cyclization of penicillin sulfoxide derived azetidinone sulfinyl chlorides and related sulfinic acid derivatives by reaction with Friedel-Craft catalysts or metathetic cation forming agents. The 3-methylenecepham compounds are useful intermediates in the preparation of cephem antibiotics.
