Method of preparing 4-disubstituted phenyl-l- tetralones of formula (see fig. I) in which X is halogen, C1-C4 alkyl or C1-C4 alkoxy and Y, situated in position 2' or 3', is halogen or C1-C4 alkyl. The method comprises the reaction, in the presence of an acid agent, of .alpha.-naphthol of formula (II) with a phenyl compound of formula (III): Image (II) Image (III) where X is halogen, C1-C4 alkyl or C1-C4 alkoxy; and Y is ortho or meta with respect to X and is halogen or C1-C4 alkyl. The product is hydrolysed to produce a compound of formula (I)
