Abstract of the Disclosure A method for preparing a nonwoven web having delayed wettability, in that the web is not wettable by water upon its formation but which becomes wettable within from about one minute to about 24 hours thereafter without any treatment, processing step, or the like which is carried out after the formation of the nonwoven web with the specific intent and purpose of rendering a normally hydrophobic nonwoven web hydrophilic or wettable with water, which method involves melting a mixture of a thermoplastic polyolefin and an addi- tive mixture, forming fibers by extruding the resulting melt through a die at a shear rate of from about 50 to about 30,000 sec-1 and a throughput of no more than about 5.4 kg/cm/hour, drawing the fibers, and collecting the fibers on a moving foraminous surface as a web of entangled fibers. The majority of the molecules of the additive mixture are polysiloxane polyethers. The additive mixture has a weight-average molecular weight of from about 450 to about 700, a number- average molecular weight of from about 350 to about 600, and a z-average molecular weight of from about 500 to about 850. The additive mixture also has a polydispersity of from about 1.1 to about 1.4 and is present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 1.8 percent by weight, based on the amount of thermoplastic polymer. - 45 -
