ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Graphite materials with particular utility as catalyst supports are prepared by coating low-ash graphite with a platinum compound in solution in an organic solvent medium including a nonvolatile organic solvent to provide a small proportion of platinum compound on the graphite surfaces. The coated graphite is heated at an elevated temperature in the presence of air or oxygen to remove the solvent and de- compose the platinum compound, leaving elemental platinum disseminated on the treated graphite surfaces. Using graphite in the form of small particles or coarse powders of inactive material having a surface area below about 1 m2 per gram, the heating is continued for a sufficient length of time to effect a weight lose of graphite particles of as little as 3% while providing a surface area of at least about 3 m2 per gram. Coherent or molded bodies of similarly inactive graph- ite having a low ash content are treated in a like manner to activate surfaces thereof by depositing small proportions of a platinum compound on such surfaces, likewise followed by heating with access of oxygen and some loss of weight. The activated graphite thus obtained may be impregnated with a catalytically effective amount of a platinum group metal or other catalytically active metal or compound.
