ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A reforming catalyst comprising a type L zeolite containing at least one Group VIII noble metal may be prepared by a method involving contacting the freshly prepared catalyst with oxygen, hydrogen or an inert gas and optionally water at elevated temperatures contacting the catalyst at elevated temperatures with a source of chlorine such as HCl or Cl2 and preferably oxygen and water, and contacting the catalyst at elevated temperatures with oxygen and optionally water. Prior to use the catalyst is reduced by contact at elevated temperatures with hydrogen and optionally water. This process enhances the dispersion of the noble metal particles. Preferably the noble metal is platinum and the elevated temperatures range from 480 to 520°C.
