ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a novel method of preparing D-ribose. This method is charac- terized in that, in a first stage, a 1,5-di-0,0- substituted derivative of D-xylorurarlose is prepared; further in that the hydroxyls in positions 2 and 3 are [each] substituted by a group which preferably is mesyl (CH3SO2) or methylthiothiocarbonyl, CH3SC(=S); further in that the 2,3-unsaturated derivative is prepared; and in that D-ribose is finally obtained by cis-hydroxylation of the carbon-carbon double bond, followed by acid hydrolysis of the 1,5-0,0-dialkyl derivatives. The D-ribose is useful in the prepara- tion of certain medicines.
