ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION Steam dealkylation of alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene, may be effected by contacting hydrocarbon at 600°F-950°F and 0-400 psig and steam to hydrocarbon ratio of 2-25:1 with a activated supported catalyst containing typically nickel, chromium, and potassium on an alumina support - the alumina support having been prepared from a high purity inactive alumina by addition thereto of small amounts of sulfate ion.
