ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a method of preparing moleic anhydride by oxidizing a un- saturated hydrocarbon or a mixture of unsaturated hydrocarbons having 4 or more than 4 carbon atoms in each molecule, there is used a catalyst comprising a mixed or complex oxide having a chemi- cal composition of Pa Mob Bic Cud Xe Of where X represents one or more members selected from the group con- sisting of iron, cobalt, nickel and potassium or a group consisting of iron, cobalt and nickel; a, b, c, d, e and f represent the numbers of the atoms of P, Mo, Bi, Cu and O respectively; e represents the sum of the numbers of the atoms of the member or members selected from the group consisting of iron, nickel, cobalt and potassium of a group consisting of iron, cobalt and nickel; and the value of f is determined by the values of a, b, c, d and e and the valencies of P, Mo, Bi, Cu and O. Further addition of alkali and/or alkaline earth metal as component involved in the catalyst resulted in the improvement of the activity of the catalyst. Alkali and alkaline earth metals selected from the group, Ld, Na, Rb, Ca, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba are useful for the present purpose.
