A preservative for ophthalmic solutions having an active ingredient is provided, having a hydrogen peroxide content of about 0.001 % to about 0.10 % by weight; and diethylene triamine penta(methylene phosphonic acid), or a physiologically compatible salt thereof, present at about 0.002 % to 0.03 % by weight and/or 0.005 % to about 0.20 % by weight of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, or a physiologically compatible salt thereof.
