A method of pretreating ore involves placing ore into a kiln. Hot gases are circulated at temperatures in excess of 1000 degree fahrenheit in the kiln to heat the ore. The hot gases are a mixture of helium and hydrogen with a helium content of at least 20% by volume in order to avoid combustion or oxidization. Ore subjected to this treatment tends to crumble, which facilitates subsequent processing.
