This invention provides a method of pretreating viable tissue or cells to be contained within a semipermeable vessel which comprises (a) suspending the viable tissue or cells in a solution comprising a substance capable of forming a gel, wherein the solution is physiologically compatible with the viable tissue or cells; and (b) treating the resulting suspension under conditions permitting the substance to form a gel. The subject invention also provides a method of containing viable tissue or cells within a semipermeable vessel which comprises pretreating viable tissue or cells according to the aforementioned method. The subject invention also provides a method of transplanting viable tissue or cells from a donor to a subject and a method of transplanting viable tissue or cells from a donor to a subject so as to protect the tissue or cells from destruction by the subject's immune system, each method comprising containing pretreated viable tissue or cells within a semipermeable vessel. Also provided are pretreated viable tissue or cells and pretreated viable tissue or cells contained within a semipermeable vessel, including pretreated viable tissue or cells contained within a microcapsule.
L'invention porte sur un procédé de prétraitement de cellules ou tissus viables destinés à être contenus dans une enveloppe semi-perméable et consistant: (a) à mettre le tissu ou les cellules en suspension dans une solution comportant une substance susceptible de former un gel et physiologiquement compatible avec les tissus ou cellules viables; (b) à traiter ladite solution dans des conditions permettant de former un gel. L'invention porte également sur un procédé de confinement de cellules ou tissus viables dans une enveloppe semi-perméable, et consistant à prétraiter lesdits tissus ou cellules selon le procédé ci-dessus; il porte également sur des méthodes de transplantation de cellules ou tissus vivants provenant d'un donneur sur un patient de telle sorte que lesdits tissus et cellules soient protégés contre la destruction par le système immunitaire du patient, chacun de ces procédés impliquant le confinement des cellules ou tissus vivants prétraités dans une enveloppe semi-perméable. L'invention porte enfin sur des cellules ou tissus vivants prétraités et contenus dans une enveloppe semi-perméable qui peut être une microcapsule.
