ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The deterioration of a palladium oxide type anode which is caused by stopping the operation of a diaphragm type electro- lytic cell in electrolysis of an alkali metal chloride is prevented by increasing the concentration of hypochlorite ions in the analyte to give a predominant anode potential in the shortcircuit state higher than a reduction potential of palladium oxide.
