ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for preventing a sag of a panel, in which a skeleton as well as a plate to be attached thereto are placed on a tentative placing rest, a radiation heating device furnished with heating elements downwards and installed on a holding truck is moved to a position over the plate, the plate is preheated to a predetermined temperature by the heating elements so as to thermally expand it, the radiation heating device is moved away from the position over the plate, the plate is quickly tacked and welded to the skeleton, and a tensile residual stress is developed in the plate owing to a thermal shrinkage deformation attendant upon cooling of the plate.
