The invention provides a method of priming an immune response in the presence of maternal antibody in a young animal by administering to a 1-90 day old animal, a biocompatible and non-toxic solid phase implant containing an immunogenic agent. A preferred implant according to the invention is one that becomes gradually disintegrated in situ the animal. The implant provides for extended sustained delivery of the immunogenic agent into surrounding tissue fluids in the presence of circulating maternal antibodies to provide a priming dose of the immunogenic agent to stimulate substantially immediate antibody production for active immunity against a pathogen when passive protection is no longer provided by circulating maternal antibodies.

L'invention concerne un procédé d'amorçage d'une réponse immunitaire en présence d'un anticorps maternel chez un jeune animal âgé de 1 - 90 jours. Pour ce faire, on administre audit animal un implant biocompatible solide et non toxique contenant un agent immunogène. Un implant préféré selon l'invention est un implant qui se désintègre graduellement in situ chez l'animal. L'implant permet un apport soutenu prolongé de l'agent immunogène dans les fluides des tissus environnants voisins en présence d'anticorps maternels circulants, afin de fournir une dose d'amorçage de l'agent immunogène pour stimuler immédiatement la production d'anticorps développant une immunité active contre un agent pathogène lorsque la protection passive n'est plus assurée par les anticorps maternels circulants.
