ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A gas flow and a microwave field are superposed in a region in which expansion of the gas by a nozzle accelerates the gas to supersonic speed. The gas flow direction and the microwave propagation direction are substantially the same. The microwave discharge may be auxiliary to a main discharge or to optical resonance.
