A process is disclosed whereby an anion or base ion exchange resin in the hydroxy form is used to absorb sulphuric acid produced in the electrolysis of an alkali metal such as sodium sulphate and thereby enable production of an alkali metal hydroxide, e.g., caustic soda, without production of chlorine. Base resin in the sulphate form from contact with sulphuric acid is then treated with an alkali metal chloride, e.g., potassium chloride, to produce alkali metal sulphate. Regeneration of the chloride laden base resin with calcium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide or aqueous ammonia leads to the hydroxy form and a chloride salt which can be recovered or recycled, as with ammonium chloride.
La présente invention divulgue un procédé dans lequel une résine échangeuse anionique (à ions basiques) sous forme hydroxylée est utilisée pour absorber l'acide sulfurique produit durant l'électrolyse d'un sel de métal alcalin comme le sulfate de sodium, permettant ainsi la production d'un hydroxyde de métal alcalin (p. ex., soude caustique) sans production de chlore. La résine basique sous forme sulfatée obtenue par contact avec l'acide sulfurique est ensuite traitée avec un chlorure de métal alcalin (p. ex., le chlorure de potassium) pour produire un sulfate de métal alcalin. La régénération de la résine anionique chargée de chlorure avec de l'hydroxyde de calcium, de l'hydroxyde de magnésium ou de l'ammoniaque redonne la forme hydroxylée et un chlorure (sel) qui peut être récupéré ou recyclé, par exemple le chlorure d'ammonium.
