ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is disclosed for making an electrode of graphite and/or similar material which is useful as an anode particularly in the anodic oxidation of sulfur dioxide. The disclosure is also concerned with a particular utilization of a novel electrode. The electrode of the invention is made as follows. An electrode body formed of graphite-like carbon material is coated with a layer of cokable organic material selected from the group consisting of sugars, phenolic resins and asphalt pitch. The thus coated electrode body is heated in an inert atmosphere to a temperature in the range 400 to 800°C, thereby coking the layer. Directly thereafter the coated electrode is heated to a temperature in the range 1400 to 2000°C whereupon it is cooled.
