A method of producing multi-focal contact lenses using a mold insert. The lenses are formed between first and second intermediate mold halves formed by injection molding. A power insert to be used in an injection mold is plated with a NiP coating. The plated insert is cut with a computer controlled mono-crystalline diamond cutter to generate a power insert having complex geometric forms. A plurality of the first contact lens mold halves are formed in an injection mold with the power insert. A plurality of the second contact mold halves are formed in an injection mold. A multi-focal contact lens is molded between the first and second mold halves with a polymerizable composition. The contact lens has at least two optical powers formed therein.
