24205-788 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic compounds having an alkoxy group of the formula: Het-OR (III) (wherein Het is a nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic ring such as pyridine ring which may be substituted and in which the nitrogen atom may be oxidized and R is alkyl, halogenated alkyl, aryl or aralkyl) are produced by reacting nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic compounds having a nitro group of the formula: Het-NO2 (I) (wherein Het is as defined above) with alcohol or alcoholate of the formula: ROM (II) (wherein R is as defined above and M is hydrogen or alkali metal) in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst and a base.
