Abstract METHOD OF PRODUCING OPTICAL WAVEGUIDES ON A SUBSTRATE In a method of producing optical waveguides (8) in the form of striplines on a substrate (1), two transparent layers (3 and 6) are applied one on top of the other on the substrate (1) and are structured in the form of optical waveguides (8). The material of the two layers (3 and 6) is selected in such a way that the melting point of the material of the second layer (6) is lower than that of the material of the first layer (3) but has a higher refractive index than the first layer (3). After formation of the structure, a heating process is implemented in which the material of the second layer (6) melts and, due to the surface tension, its surface, when seen in cross section, takes on the shape of the arc of a circle. With this cross-sectional shape, coupling of light waves into and out of an optical fiber is possible at one edge of the substrate (11) after the end faces (10) of the optical waveguide (8) have been ground or polished.
