A B S T R A C T Polybutadiene having a high cis-1,4 content is produced by polymerizing butadiene-1,3 in an organic solvent comprising a C4-C8 aliphatic hydrocarbon using a catalyst system comprising (a) diethyl aluminum chloride, (b) water and (c) cobalt octoate or cobalt naphthenate. The catalyst com- pounds are added to the butadiene-1,3 in hydrocarbon solution in the sequence (a), (b), (c) or in the sequence (b), (a), (c). The product is useful as a raw material in automobile tire, gasket and conveyor belt manufacture.
