The present invention provides a method and apparatus for producing polymeric particles with pre-designed size, shape, morphology and composition, and more particularly the present invention uses a microfluidic polymerization reactor for producing same. The present invention disclosed herein provides a process for producing polymer particles with pre-selected shapes. The method includes injecting a first fluid comprising a polymerizable constituent with a controlled flow rate into a microfluidic channel and injecting a second fluid with a controlled flow rate into the microfluidic channel in which the second fluid mixes with the first fluid, the second fluid being immiscible with the first fluid so that the first fluid forms into droplets in the microfluidic channel. The microfluidic channel has pre-selected dimensions to give droplets of pre-selected size, morphology and shape. The microfluidic channel is sufficiently long so that the droplets have a sufficiently long residence time in the channel so that they polymerize or otherwise harden into droplets of pre-selected size and shape.
La présente invention concerne un procédé et un appareil de production de particules polymères présentant une taille, une forme, une morphologie et une composition pré-conçues et plus particulièrement l'invention utilise un réacteur de polymérisation microfluidique pour les produire. La présente invention a trait à un procédé de production de particules polymères ayant des formes présélectionnées. Le procédé consiste à injecter un premier fluide contenant un constituant polymérisable à un débit régulé dans un canal microfluidique et à injecter un second fluide ayant un débit régulé dans le canal microfluidique dans lequel le second fluide se mélange au premier fluide, le second fluide n'étant pas miscible au premier fluide de telle sorte que le premier fluide se transforme en gouttelettes dans le canal microfluidique. Le canal microfluidique présente des dimensions présélectionnées pour donner des gouttelettes d'une grosseur, d'une morphologie et d'une forme présélectionnées. Le canal microfluidique est suffisamment long pour que les gouttelettes aient un temps de résidence suffisamment long dans le canal, de manière qu'elles polymérisent ou encore durcissent en gouttelettes d'une grosseur et d'une forme présélectionnées.
