14961 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of producing silicon in a low-shaft electrical furnace in which reductant briquets having at least a 50% excess of carbon over that required to form silicon carbide from silicon dioxide in the briquets are provided at the upper portion of the furnace so that this excess carbon is transformed into activated carbon with a coke structure and participates in the subsequent reduction of molten quartz at a lower portion of this furnace. ef-W
