A process for polishing a workpiece. The process comprises the steps of: (a) placing a structured abrasive article bearing precisely shaped abrasive composites on at least one ma- jor surface thereof in contact with a surface of a workpiece having a surface having a scratch pattern having an initial Ra value thereon such that said composite bearing surface is in con- tact with said workpiece surface; (b) moving at least one of said workpiece or said structured abrasive article relative to the other in a first abrading direction, while simultaneously mov- ing at least one of said workpiece or said struc- tured abrasive article relative to the other in a second abrading direction not parallel to said first abrading direction such that said second abrading direction crosses said first abrading direction while contact is maintained between said composite bearing surface and said work- piece surface, whereby said initial Ra value is reduced. Typically, the surface of the work- piece is characterized by a scratch pattern hav- ing an initial Ra preferably less than about 120 micrometers, more preferably less than about 90 micrometers, most preferably less than about 20 micrometers.

L'invention concerne un procédé de polissage d'une pièce. Ce procédé consiste à: (a) placer un article abrasif structuré porteur de matériaux composites abrasifs de forme précise sur au moins une surface principale de cet article se trouvant en contact avec une surface de la pièce, cette pièce ayant une surface présentant une configuration de rayures possédant une valeur initiale Ra de sorte que la surface porteuse du matériau composite se trouve en contact avec la surface de la pièce; (b) déplacer au moins une pièce ou un article abrasif structuré par rapport à l'autre dans un premier sens d'abrasion, tout en déplaçant simultanément au moins une pièce ou un article abrasif structuré par rapport à l'autre dans un second sens d'abrasion qui n'est pas parallèle au premier sens d'abrasion, de sorte que ce second sens d'abrasion traverse le premier sens d'abrasion alors que le contact est maintenu entre la surface porteuse du matériau composite et la surface de la pièce, cette valeur initiale Ra étant réduite. Généralement, la surface de la pièce se caractérise par une configuration de rayures présentant une valeur initiale Ra de préférence inférieure à environ 120 micromètres et mieux à environ 90 micromètres, et encore mieux à environ 20 micromètres.
