A method is disclosed for providing a friable polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) product that has particles of a desired size which are flowable and do not tend to agglomerate. To achieve this result, the PTFE starting material is handled at a temperature below 66 °F, and preferably below 55 °F, before irradiating. The PTFE starting material may be mixed with a wetting agent before irradiating to provide a product that has enhanced dispersibility. The source of radiation may include electron beam radiation, nuclear radiation, or radiation from a cobalt-60 (Co60) source.

L'invention concerne un produit friable, à base de polytétrafluoroéthylène (PTFE) dont les particules présentent une taille voulue, sont coulantes et n'ont pas tendance à s'agglomérer. Ledit procédé consiste à traiter ladite matière première au PTFE, à une température inférieure à 66 DEG F, de préférence inférieure à 55 DEG F, avant de l'irradier. Avant l'irradiation, ladite matière première au PTFE peut être mélangée à un agent mouillant, de sorte qu'un produit ayant une dispersibilité accrue soit produit. La source de radiation peut comprendre une source de faisceau de rayonnement électronique, nucléaire ou de cobalt-60 (Co60).
