ABSTRACT A method of forming large size openings in thick reinforced concrete wall such as a reinforced concrete dam body is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of drilling a plurality of holes through the wall around the periphery of the opening; disposing a cutting cable successively through pairs of adjacent holes; while the cable is disposed through each pair of adjacent holes cutting through the wall between said pair of holes by cable sawing with water injection, thereby providing a separated opening core; and breaking and removing the separated core. According to this method, the opening in thick reinforced concrete walls such as a reinforced concrete dam body and which has in the past been difficult if not impossible to form, can be safely and exactly formed with only a small number of process steps, without any adverse effect on the surrounded wall.
