Abstract of the Disclosure It is known to apply liquid crystal solutions to a substrate, dry the coating and then cover the coated substrate with a further protective coating. Such coated substrates lack sufficient adhesion between the various coatings to be useful. Additionally it is difficult to coat substrates with liquid crystals. The present seeks to provide a pulverulent liquid crystal composition useful in preparing coating composition. The present invention provides a process for preparing a pulverulent micro-encapsulated cholesteryl- type liquid crystal composition comprising mixing about equal parts of a micro- encapsulated cholesteryl-type liquid crystal having a particle size from about 10 to about 30 microns with a binder from the group comprising: (a) an animal protein composition comprising from about 10 to about 20% protein, up to about 0.8% phosphate and the balance water; (b) a cellulosic composition comprising from about 10 to about 20% cellulose or a derivative thereof, and the balance solvent; (c) a milled polyester having a particle size of from about 10 to about 30 microns; and where the resulting mixture is a slurry, spraying the slurry into a vessel heated at a temperature up to 70°C and evaporating the solvent from the slurry, to form a film inside said vessel, removing said film from said vessel and mechanically crushing the so removed film to a particle size of less than 20 microns.
