A method of isolating a purified tall oil sterol from neutral tall oil components, characterized by: (a) contacting the neutral tall oil components with at least one solvent selected from the group consisting of methanol, hydrous methanol, hydrous ethanol, hydrous isopropanol, and hydrous n-propanol at a temperature exceeding the boiling point at ordinary pressure of the solvent; (b) removing the matter remaining undissolved in the solvent from the resultant mixture; and (c) crystallizing the tall oil sterol from the solution obtained and recovering the crystals by filtration. By this method, a high- purity tall oil sterol can be easily isolated from neutral tall oil components.

L'invention porte sur un procédé permettant de séparer un stérol purifié d'avec des composants neutres de tall oil consistant: (a) à mettre en contact les composants neutres de tall oil avec au moins un solvant choisi parmi le méthanol, le méthanol hydraté, l'éthanol hydraté, l'isopropanol hydraté, et le n-propanol hydraté, à une température dépassant le point d'ébullition du solvant à la pression normale; (b) à extraire la matière non dissoute dans le solvant du mélange résultant; et (c) à faire cristalliser le stérol de tall oil de la solution obtenue et à récupérer les cristaux par filtrage. On peut ainsi isoler un stérol de tall oil très pur des composants neutres de tall oil.
