A B S T R A C T Zirconium and alloys thereof are quenched from the beta phase temperature range, i.e. at least 1830°F., into water having a temperature of at least about 140°F., whereby to inhibit the formation of a blocky alpha structure surface layer which ordinarily forms upon subsequent heating in the alpha temperature range.
