ABSTRACT A method of re-arranging a tertiary vinyl carbinol having the structure: Image by reacting the carbinol with a lower alkanoic acid, anhydride thereof or a mixture thereof in the presence of an acid catalyst to produce a re-arranged compound having the structure: Image wherein X is the residue of the acid reactant. The resulting ester may be saponified to produce a compound having the structure: Image which is the allylic isomer of the original vinyl carbinol.
