ABSTRACT A method for the recovery of volatile oils from a liquid hydrogenation residue which is obtained by the hydrogenation of heavy oil, very heavy oil, tar, bitumen, shale oil or tar sand oil. The method comprises feeding the hydrogenation residue into the liquid entry space at the bottom of an at least one shaft screw extruder by means of a positive displacement pump, the screw extruder being provided with a heating jacket, and subjecting the hydrogenation residue to distillation under reduced pressure conditions. This method avoids the problems associated with the accumulation of vacuum residues in known vacuum distillation process.
